History

Van Ness Avenue Elementary School opened in 1916 off of Van Ness Avenue.

The principal construction of the what is now the main building began in 1923. The sculptural enhancement of the entry of Van Ness Elementary School is reminiscent of the Gothic style. Architects Noerenberg and Johnson were responsible for the design of the 1923 building.

In June 2013, Van Ness Avenue Elementary began the merge with its adjacent neighbor, Frances Blend School, to promote an integrating learning community. Frances Blend School opened in 1926 and was previously the Blind and Sight Saving School on the 32nd Street School campus. It was renamed after its first principal, Frances Blend, in 1952. The merge of the two school was unofficially called "Larchmont Village Learning Complex."

California Distinguished Schools Program

In 2013, Van Ness Avenue Elementary was selected for its significant gains in narrowing the achievement and access gap. The school was recognized as a California Distinguished School for high academic achievement as a Title I school.
Information Technology Services

During the 2023-2024 school year, Van Ness Avenue Elementary partnered with the district's Information Technology Services. Part of the Clinton Avenue side of campus and the north offices became a ITS Support Center, Region West. The center provides in-person IT support for all stakeholders (students, teachers, families).
